JOB TITLE: Advice Volunteer

RESPONSIBLE TO: Advice Manager

LOCATION: CLEAR Office 2 James Street SO14 1PJ

Weekly 4 hour session on one or more of the following days: Wednesday 9:30am to 1:30pm, Thursday 9:30am to 1:30pm or Thursday 1pm to 5pm. The same day each week is expected and we offer £3 towards lunch. A 6 month commitment is preferable.


Clear is a charity that supports refugees and migrants. The Advice Team exists to help refugees and migrants build their life in Southampton, assisting them with accessing services such as benefits and housing. The role is based at our offices at 2, James Street. SO14 1PJ.



  • Working 1-2-1 with clients in person and via phone, supporting them to understand their circumstances and options to resolve current challenges
  • Assist clients to apply for and manage services, including welfare benefits, housing, school places, utility bills etc. including notifying agencies of changes in circumstances
  • Advocate for the client where necessary and appropriate with their consent
  • Liaise with other organisations e.g. government departments, the local council, voluntary organisation, education providers, utility companies in conjunction with clients
  • Provide general support to clients in times of need or crisis, for example listening to current circumstances and referring them to other support services
  • Liaising with colleagues to identify support options for clients
  • Administration duties around recording appointments and actions
  • Undertaking regular training and development to enhance knowledge and improve skills



  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Good communication skills
  • Confident working with people in a one to one setting in person or via telephone
  • IT skills
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Good listener, patient and calm under pressure
  • Able to work on own initiative within agreed parameters
  • Able to follow set processes and guidance
  • Good teamwork skills


  • Local knowledge of Southampton area and local services
  • Knowledge of UK systems around welfare benefits. housing, education
  • Understanding of the situation for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK
  • Able to prioritise work and work to timescales
  • Able to work flexibly and respond well to change
  • Previous experience working in a people facing environment
  • Previous office or administrative experience

This volunteer role will require an enhanced DBS check to be completed due to the nature of the work.
