Mr M from Somalia was given Indefinite Leave to Remain, studied hard and gained a place at University in the UK. Later his wife, two children and two orphaned nieces came to join him in the UK. Initially, all the family were crowded into a single student room, until the Housing Department agreed to provide a temporary house.
CLEAR supported the family by obtaining basic household items (cooker, bedding, toys etc) and by helping with school and benefit applications. Both the mother and older children attended CLEAR ESOL classes whilst awaiting school and college places.
Alongside this practical support, CLEAR made many calls to HMRC, written letters to the local MP and other agencies during the eight frustrating months the family were struggling to survive whilst waiting for benefits to start.
